The GMB, Britains General Union which represent 300,000 members in public services, has welcomed the Minister for School Standards David Milibands announcement today extending the two tier workforce code across all maintained schools including voluntary and foundation schools.
The move will ensure that in future all school support staff will be guaranteed terms and conditions no less favourable than those who transferred from the Governing body a move which trade unions have long pressed for.
Brian Strutton, GMB Public Services National Secretary said;
We strongly welcome the intent of the Governments announcement and the statement today from the Minister. This is a further example of Labour delivering for people at work and GMB members in public services will be delighted by this announcement.
However the draft regulations do not quite reflect the strength of the Ministers commitment and we will be seeking to ensure that they do. But today GMB members will be giving DfES 2 ½ cheers for this important step to protect school support staff.
