Addressing strikers and demonstrators at the PCS rally in Manchester today, GMB General Secretary Kevin Curran said:

"The GMB has over 260,000 members working across the public sector. We stand opposed to the 104,000 job cuts that civil servants in the PCS are facing.

"All trade unionists know that this level of cuts will decimate service delivery, meaning poorer services for British people.

"The Government's failure to consult with PCS and the other civil service unions is - I know - having a devastating effect on morale across the civil service.

"We also condemn 'the back of a fag packet' maths of the Gershon review which has not got an earthly chance of meeting the 'efficiency savings' that it claims. In fact all of the available research indicates that the Gershon review will achieve less than 6% of the savings it claims can be achieved.

"We cannot allow the Government and its nasty little army of spin doctors to create a false divide between the frontline and so-called back office services.

"As if the present was not bad enough, looking to the future, our fear is that what the Government are doing to you now - they will do to our members in local government, the NHS and, in our schools next.

"New Labour's mantra of public service reform seems, more than ever, to be code for cuts, privatisation, and now job losses on a huge scale.

"We must fight together now to stop this. We will stand together with PCS every step of the way."
