Campaign time not champagne time - GMB response to Labour's move to end two-tier workforce

Date / 20th July 2004

Responding to the commitment from the Government to end the tier-two workforce across the public services, GMB General Secretary Kevin Curran said:

“While we welcome a renewed statement of Labour’s commitment to end the two-tier workforce, the GMB will wait and see how universal it turns out to be - and when it will be delivered. There are stories reaching us that the health, education and defence departments are not yet fully signed up to the move, which gives us cause for concern.

“More than a restatement of commitments, which of course we welcome, we want to see a detailed assurance that the two-tier code will be strengthened so that the pay and conditions and pensions of public sector workers are comprehensively protected.

“The GMB will be following the issue closely, and continuing our work to secure an absolute end to the two-tier workforce. Until that happens, it’s campaign time not champagne time.”
